Eight Creighton medical students (see
Bios) are traveling to South East Asia in hopes of providing medical supplies
to communities in need, improving preventative medicine through educational
presentations, and to gain increasing knowledge on the realities of healthcare
abroad, where many times there are limited resources and ever increasing need
for medical care.
We will be starting our journey in Cambodia. We arrive in
Phenom Phen in the middle of May 2012 and then travel four hours south to
Kampot one of the most southern cities in Cambodia. Once we arrive we will be
linking up with Solaid International, which is a non-profit organization founded
by a Creighton alumnus. While we are there we will help provide health services
and assist with educational programs to the villagers of Kampot, which promote
the knowledge and skills required to lead healthier lives. You can learn more
about Solaid International here at www.solaid.org
After a
week with Solaid we will be moving on to Kuala Lampur, Malaysia and we will be
working with HOPE worldwide Malaysia. HOPE worldwide (www.hopeww.org) is an
international non-profit organization with a mission "to change lives by
harnessing the compassion and commitment of dedicated staff and volunteers to
deliver sustainable, high-impact, community-based services to the poor and
needy”
The last
leg of our trip is taking us down to Jakarta, Indonesia and once again, we will
be working with HOPE worldwide. Here in Indonesia we will be helping a myriad
of groups by splitting our time between tuberculosis clinics, orphanages and
health clinics.
In these countries, we will be working in a variety of clinics and seeing a variety of people as we travel. Our hopes is to not only garner increased knowledge of global health, but to also obtain a greater appreciation for cultures, religions, traditions and customs that may be different from our own.
